A modern and very sophisticated expression of Japanese martial arts, aikido is a non-competitive discipline that offers both effective self-defense and spiritual self-mastery. The word “Aikido” can be translated as the way (do) of harmonizing (ai) spiritual power (ki). It was created in the 1940s by Morihei Ueshiba (who aikido practitioners call O-sensei, or great teacher) after years of physical training and spiritual searching. Ueshiba taught that an aikidoka must keep his center while searching for harmony with the opponent. A skilled aikido practitioner knows a variety of devastating throws and joint locks, yet he seeks to neutralize an attack while causing minimal permanent damage to the opponent.

Every year, three local aikido federations—the Filipino Federation of Aikido (FFA), the Pilipinas Aikido Propagation Association (PAPA) and Aikido Philippines (AP)—join forces to host several aikido seminars by Japanese teachers
